pattern recognition

Pattern recognition is a highly useful skill.

We constantly call things modern, but you’d be surprised to see how much of what we do is merely a modern upgrade on something that’s happened before.

This is something that happens in fashion all the time. Trends come and go. Something that’s being worn in 2017 first took off in 1950, but the time was right for it to make a return.

Mobile phones are another example.

Mobiles got smaller and smaller for around 20 years, then began to get bigger and bigger again once we realised that the space was needed for screens.

Facial hair trends constantly change, but there’s not a lot that can be done. Therefore old styles keep looping back around and get labelled as modern.

What’s currently happening with VR, the internet, video and voice recognition, happened with TV, radio, even writing and reading in years gone by.

By researching history, you can predict with accuracy what’s coming next.

The system isn’t important, we’re not writing this article in order to call-out hipsters and say that what they’re doing is just a remake of the 60’s.

What’s important is recognizing where the next trends are coming from through pattern recognition.

How To Spot Pattern Recognition

In order to understand what’s coming next, sometimes you need foresight and vision.

However in many cases the future can be predicted by understanding history.

Because things are new, and different parts, systems, tech and more is being used, it’s easy to think that something original is being created.

But if you are able to peer through the smoke and mirrors, you’ll see that the foundation of change is very similar to something that’s already happened.

Disruption is a modern buzzword, but the process of disruption isn’t new.

The Ford Model-T was a form of disruption. People got off their horses and bought cars that were finally affordable.

There’s not a lot of difference between this example and the introduction of Uber, however many people don’t make the link because all of the pieces and players are different, but the arena, field, court, etc are exactly the same. So are the rules of the game.

Something more efficient and time saving comes along, it cancels out the old method. A car saves time over a horse. Uber saves time on cabs, 100 years apart but the same path was walked.

Using This To Your Advantage

It’s wise to study old trends, how things became obsolete in the past and so forth.

It’s important to spot loops.

Human life can sometimes appear like a straight line. But in reality it’s nothing more than continuous loops, with each loop being slightly more technologically advanced than the last.

Communications is a great example.

We once had spoken word as our main form of conversation. Once people started writing letters, there was resistance, and people thought that it would ruin the art of spoken word forever and conversation would die.

When the first telephone was invented. people panicked that writing and face to face skills would evaporate.

Once mobiles arrived everyone was worried that we’d be walking around using them all day long, which we kind of are, but they’ve still taken over.

Now people are worried that VR is going to take us away from real life and we’ll communicate in virtual reality.

In all of these evolution’s, the process of improved efficiency is a continuing trend. We also see that despite the concerns of those resisting change, it still happened and in fact became normality.

By understanding this system, it may enable you to spot this reoccurring pattern in the future. When everyone else is saying that a certain piece of technology won’t last, you should remember that this has been something people said prior, but were wrong about, and eventually got on-board with the changes like everyone else.

These patterns have made people extremely successful, and all they’ve done is study history and guess that what’s happened before, will occur once more.

However, as simplistic as this skill is, it’s crucial and something that’s so easy to learn. Read a few books, look back at history and apply what you know to current events.

This effortless skill could give you a major advantage over those caught up in the illusion of modernisation.
