time is money

If time is money, then why do we dream about money, wish we had more and study ways to make it, yet disregard our time like it’s an unlimited budget?

Budget Allocation

When it comes to money not everyone spends it wisely. However the majority of people do have some level of structure. This could perhaps be 5 things that their money is used for.

An example is… Bills, their car, their kids, weekends and even a savings account.

The percentages may be set in stone if the person is frugal and financially aware, or they could vary each month depending on how life goes.

The method isn’t important, what’s important is the fact that they’ve decided to allocate money in the first place.

We set aside certain amounts of money like mature adults, yet when it comes to time we kind of play it as it comes.

Time Allocation

Time is so important. Each day you get given 24 hours, the same as everyone else on planet Earth to make things happen.

Too many people let the day control them, rather than them controlling their day.

Waking up and “going with the flow” is a sure way to get nowhere. You can’t just wake up whenever you want, work if you feel like it, do things at random and live like a free-spirited teenager. This approach to life sounds great when you’re 16, but as an adult it’s not a smart move.

Time based structure is a must. If there’s 24 hours in a day, every day, then you know what’s coming, it shouldn’t be a surprise.

You need to write down the few most important things in your life right now, then dedicate time to those priorities.

We all need to sleep, some need more than others, but 8 hours seems to be the benchmark.

This leaves us with 16 hours of time to allocate a day.

If your top priority is success, money and moving forward in life, then you should allocate 10 hours to this goal.

If you want to stay in shape along the way, then allocate 2 hour a day to fitness.

This leaves 4 hours to spare which can be used for daily activities such as travel, eating and so on.

This allocation is a basic example, yours may look different and more complex. But the general rule should be followed. If you want to achieve a goal or get something done this year, then it’s going to require effort and time.

By giving any goal 4 hours of your day every day for the next year, momentum will build and progress will occur, it’s inevitable.

But without this initial allocation, we end up with the typical response of “I’d love to do it but I just don’t have time”. The only reason people say this, is because they’re busy wasting time rather than using it.

Spontaneous People

Those people living without structure never get much done. How can you? Every time you decide to do something, another event comes up and you’re running off to do that instead.

You wouldn’t believe how many people don’t know what they’ll be doing from day to day.

It’s well known that successful people are those who have foresight. Even as unpredictable as the modern world is, successful people will have some idea of where they’ll be in a year, what task they’ll be doing and they’ll have a picture of this in their mind.

The average person doesn’t do this. Most live day to day, never knowing what they’ll spend their time doing.

In the book rich habits it was reported after spending equal amounts of time with rich and poor people, that rich people were dramatically more likely to keep daily to-do lists.

This speaks volumes for the case of structure and time allocation.

Too Much At Once

People who do well in life are usually called assholes, or selfish. But they actually take pride in this statement because it shows that they’re doing things correctly.

The average person is open to all ideas, suggestions, trips, random getaways and spontaneous moments. With this mind-set they try and please everyone.

If you try and balance success, social life, relationships, family life, fitness and more all in one day, then nothing receives enough hours to be effective.

An hour with your wife, an hour with your kids, an hour with your friends, an hour with your boss after work, an hour with your parents, the average person just can’t distribute time like this and ever get anything done.

Time allocation requires upsetting people. Find what matters most to you right now and give that single thing 50% of your time at minimum.

Next find two more things, 5 maximum, and share the time you have left into each.

You can’t do everything at once. Just like you can’t sit around waiting for things to happen.

Give each day a purpose. Know what you’re going to do the day before you do it. Have a vision in mind and know that it’s all for a good cause, an investment of time if you like.

Time and Money are very similar. We need to all learn how to allocate them better, between them they control everything. If you’re out of either one, you’re going nowhere until you get more, or your investment pays-off.

For the people who believe they have busy lives, you need to change your approach. If you have more than 3-5 priorities at any one time in your life, then nothing is truly a priority to you.
