mayweather vs mcgregor breakdown

The fight of the century? Perhaps, but the only thing people are regularly debating is who’s going to win?

In order to make a good decision you need to understand how the fight is likely to go and where the strengths of both men lie.

Size

McGregor is the larger man. His reach, height and weight is superior to Mayweathers, and his general frame just appears to be a lot bigger naturally.

However, is the size going to be a large factor when boxing doesn’t include grappling? Mayweather is an expert at keeping his opponents at bay, and you’d think without grappling, in terms of size, only McGregor’s reach is going to be an advantage, and a mild one at that.

We also have to remember that Mayweather fought and beat Oscar De La Hoya at light middleweight, which means he’s able to handle a bigger man.

Age

Mayweather isn’t young, he’s 40 years old. McGregor is 28 and certainly in his prime physically. Mayweather has openly admitted that his speed isn’t what it once was, which certainly helps McGregor.

However Mayweather is still fast and his timing is impeccable. Even at 40 you’d have to say Mayweather has the ability to break through McGregors defence with textbook boxing just like Nate Diaz showed us.

Can Mayweather hurt McGregor? You’d have to say not likely. Mayweather has only knocked out Hatton and controversially Ortiz in his most recent fights, the vast majority of his fights have gone the distance in recent years. This could present a situation like Mayweather vs Maidana where Maidana simply walked through Mayweathers punches and applied huge amounts of pressure through brute force.

Boxing Masterclass

The biggest fear for McGregor fans, is that Mayweathers dedication to just boxing, has made him that much better than McGregor who’s been practising multiple arts.

McGregors boxing is good, it’s clean we know that. He has good fundamentals, his timing, precision, natural power and balance aren’t in question, but it’s his skill level that remains unclear.

With Mayweather perhaps being the best technical boxer of all time, this could be the one factor that makes a win for McGregor a step too far.

We know that other professional boxers fail to hit Mayweather cleanly, his defensive skills are unrivalled. This does make you question how McGregor is going to land cleanly enough to take Mayweather out, which logically should be his strategy since you’d expect a Mayweather win on points if it went the distance.

Power

It only takes one punch. We know McGregor has the kind of power fighters pray for. He just touches opponents and they go to sleep.

Mayweather is impossible to hit, but if even one of McGregors punches lands on the button, you’d expect Mayweather to follow suit and hit the canvas.

Fitness

Mayweather has no issue going 12 rounds at a good pace, however McGregors fitness has been questioned in MMA in 5 round fights.

If Mayweather survives the first few rounds, you’d expect him to start picking McGregor off. This isn’t to say that McGregor doesn’t have good fitness, he does he’s an athlete and he’s going to be training for 12 rounds, but Mayweather controls the pace so well and times his work within rounds to perfection.

Logical Conclusion

With all of the data above, we can draw some simple conclusions.

  • If Mayweather lasts the first few rounds, he’ll out manoeuvre McGregor until the closing of the fight
  • If McGregor even glances Mayweathers head, it could be lights out
  • Mayweather isn’t as young and quick as he once was, yet McGregors in his prime, this makes the fight a level playing field
  • With McGregors power and size, Mayweather isn’t going to take risks, this is going to lead to a Pacquiao approach where Mayweather kept his distance. However McGregor is more aggressive than Pacquiao and more likely to rush Mayweather and rough him up a little,  This strategy for McGregor is tiring, but if he manages to corner him even once, Mayweather’s in trouble, and over 12 rounds, this is bound to happen at least once
  • There’s only 2 outcomes for this fight. 1. Mayweather points win (Highly likely). 2. McGregor knockout (Definitely Possible).
