career in media

Choosing a career is tough with so many options. However there are 2 components that you should be focusing on.

  1. Longevity
  2. Expansion

Longevity means a career that you can remain in for decades to come. Too many people think short term, and end up in a career that may become obsolete in the next 5 years.

Technology is a great field to get into because longevity is technology. Most of the jobs that are being lost to robots, or are becoming obsolete have technology to blame. Therefore by being in a career governed by technology you ride the wave and grow with the changes.

Expansion refers to how much further that career can take you and how many options it has.

Choosing a career doesn’t have to happen right away. People who already have good jobs may feel as though they haven’t quite found their calling yet.

However one line of work that is open to everyone and fits the description above, is media. By media we’re referring to photography, film making, music and anything else that falls into the creative sector.

The Benefits Of A Career In Media

No Limits

In a recent Conor McGregor interview, he told a story about meeting a guy far richer than him. This man told McGregor that fighters are like dentists, they’re only making money when they’re pulling teeth.

The same is true for so many jobs, most people only make money when they’re at work. However that adds up to a lot of lost time where money could be made.

In media, every moment is a potential project. Crazy weather, a wedding, a news story, an interview, tips, a great photo and anything else you can think of can be captured on film or in a photo.

If it’s 11pm on a Sunday, you can still get out and film or take photos. Most jobs don’t enable you to do this, it’s such a flexible line of work.

Job/Entrepreneur

You have a real choice in media of having a job or being an entrepreneur. Someone could pay you to do certain work, or you could start your own company and find your own projects.

Many jobs offer this, but with media the transfer from job to entrepreneur is effortless. It’s not like you need an office, extra staff etc, you can simply build a brand, register the company and continue as normal but keep all of the profits for yourself.

Ability To Learn

Photography and film making are skillful arts, but they’re not exactly impossible to learn. Shadow someone who knows what they’re doing for a week and you’ll probably have a good basic understanding.

Of course like any craft it requires mastery to get to the top, but the barrier for entry could be as simple as having good equipment and basic editing skills.

Anything you don’t know about quantum physics, may take years to understand. Anything you don’t know about filming or photography can be researched on YouTube or fixed with a piece of technology/equipment and corrected quickly.

Obsess over this craft for a few years and you’d be very surprised how quickly you could rise to the top.

Technology Improvements

This line of work revolves around the technology available. We could not live in a better time for this craft.

Mobile cameras are now 4k and at a very high quality when stabilised. 4k drones are now available for cheap. High quality 6k cameras are now a couple thousand, and editing software is nothing short of miraculous especially with the amount of effects.

Technology in this line of work is only going to improve and make your craft easier.

Enjoyment

We spoke about it in the last section, mobiles, drones, cameras, etc, what you can do with all of this is fun. Who wouldn’t want to spend all day filming cool stuff and flying drones over beautiful places?

Options

There’s not a company around in 2017 that doesn’t use video for something. Just look at the MSI homepage and the video we have when people arrive on desktop.

These videos are in demand, they have a big impact and they’re here to stay.

You have so much room for expansion. Start off doing weddings, and 5 years later be filming TV ads for large companies. Not enough? Make a short budget film and aim for a future in Hollywood.

The possibilities are endless and technology is only going to aid this journey.

You can also combine this line of work with other fields such as music, advertising and various publications.

Big Money

If you master your craft and produce a portfolio that blows people away, the amount you can earn is spectacular. You could be earning anywhere from $5k per project to $5 million, it’s up to you how far you go and that’s a nice position to be in.

New Environments

This line of work has you meeting new people all around the world. One day you could be shooting in a concrete jungle, the next you’re in Aspen and the next you’re shooting a nature scene.

There’s so much variety in terms of location and personnel, that you’ll avoid the mundane office environment so many others get stuck in.
